A branch of the National Robots Test and Assessment Center is under construction in Chongqing's Liangjiang New Area and is expected to begin operations at the end of this year, local media reported on Nov 9.

With a total investment of 300 million yuan ($45 million), work on the Chongqing branch began in June, 2015. It will be the first and only national assessment and appraisal institution for robots in West China.

According to the plan, the center will have four labs, offering 300 testing and assessment services and taking part in setting standards for the robot industry, which will boost its development in the region.

So far, Liangjiang New Area has gathered some 30 major projects from leading domestic and overseas robotics companies, including KUKA, Kawasaki, FANUC and ABB. The agreements signed involve nearly three billion yuan, and are expected to generate an annual output value of seven billion yuan.

Most of the projects have settled in the Shuitu High-tech Industrial Park which was established to boost the development and clustering of high-end robot companies. Liangjiang New Area has formed a comparatively comprehensive industrial chain covering manufacturing and applications of robots. The robot industry will be a focus for many economic strategists in the coming years.
