Chongqing has unveiled ambitious plans to establish a global smart electric vehicle (EV) industry base within the next three years, as announced at a news conference on April 22. The city aims to achieve an annual production capacity of over 15 million smart EVs by 2027.

The rapid expansion of Chongqing's electric vehicle industry is supported by a comprehensive supply chain that spans from vehicle manufacturing to component production. Three major EV companies – Yadea, Aima, and Tailg – have already set up operations in the city, boosting capacity expansion and production scaling.

Over 60 percent of EV components, including motors, electronic controls, frames, lighting, and instruments, are locally sourced.

In the first quarter of this year, Chongqing produced 1.1 million electric vehicles, a year-on-year increase of 46.7 percent.

A representative from the Chongqing Economic and Information Technology Commission highlighted that the city will focus on strengthening its support for core components and aims to establish a global operation system for smart EVs, a cooperative development platform, an industry brain, and a data service system.

To achieve these goals, Chongqing will concentrate on three key areas: enhancing industrial development capabilities, building an industrial service system, and promoting urban demonstration applications.
