CATL, a global leader in new energy technologies, commenced production on a CTP (Cell-To-Pack) battery production line on June 30, in collaboration with Seres Auto at the Seres Super Factory in Liangjiang New Area, Chongqing.
This development marks a significant step in Chongqing's ambition to become a hub for intelligent, connected new energy vehicles.
CATL, with six R&D centers and 13 production bases worldwide, reported a 21.79 percent increase in lithium-ion battery sales in 2024, reaching 475 gigawatt-hours.
According to CATL Chairman Zeng Yuqun, this production line represents the company's most advanced smart and digital manufacturing capabilities, signifying the beginning of CATL's localized production in Chongqing.
This is CATL's first collaboration with an automaker using a "factory within a factory" model, enabling the localized production of power battery systems for Seres' AITO models, which is expected to reduce associated costs.
Seres and CATL have a long-standing partnership, having signed a strategic cooperation agreement in 2023. In December 2024, they announced the launch of CATL's Qilin Battery in new AITO models. Previous AITO models have sold over 700,000 units and have all been equipped with various types of CATL batteries.
Zhang Xinghai, chairman of Seres, said that this collaboration will enhance AITO's production capacity and delivery speed, providing stronger power and reliable safety for the model's high-end smart electric vehicles.
Xu Hongqiu, director of the Liangjiang New Area administrative committee, said that authorities will continue to provide a top-notch business environment, enhance support measures, and optimize service processes to help enterprises grow.
Liangjiang has developed a comprehensive industrial chain that includes headquarters-level R&D, vehicle manufacturing, core components, automotive distribution, and application scenarios. In the first four months of this year, the area produced 194,000 new energy vehicles, an 83.2 percent year-on-year increase.
