The Huaneng Chongqing Liangjiang Gas Turbine Phase II project in Liangjiang New Area was commissioned on Aug 15.

The commissioning marks the completion of the largest natural gas clean energy power plant by installed capacity in Southwest China. The plant will play a crucial role in enhancing energy stability and optimizing the energy structure in Chongqing.

With this development, the total installed capacity of the Huaneng Chongqing Liangjiang Gas Turbine plant has reached an impressive 2,418 megawatts, accounting for 14.69 percent of Chongqing's total thermal power capacity.

The 2.88 billion yuan ($400.96 million) project features the world's most advanced 9H-class gas turbine model. This cutting-edge technology allows for a power generation thermal efficiency of up to 64 percent, while carbon emissions per kilowatt-hour are 50 percent less than those from coal-fired units of the same class.

The plant's annual power generation capacity exceeds 10 billion kWh, enough to meet the electricity needs of over 3 million households. It is expected to reduce standard coal consumption by approximately 1.3 million metric tons and carbon dioxide emissions by around 3.3 million tons annually.

This project represents the pinnacle of domestic 700 MW-class gas-steam combined cycle power generation technology. It features high automation, rapid start-up and shutdown capabilities, and strong peak-shaving capacity, reaching full-load peak operation within just one hour under hot conditions.

The plant will continue to utilize IoT sensing, big data, and artificial intelligence to develop an intelligent power plant and accelerate digital transformation.
