Chongqing is becoming a global hub for medical tourism, attracting patients from around the world with its cutting-edge non-invasive medical treatments. One such patient, Harrison James from Australia, recently completed his medical treatment and went for a sightseeing tour of the city.
James was diagnosed with a malignant pancreatic tumor and struggled to find a suitable surgical solution in his home country. He traveled to Chongqing's Liangjiang New Area to undergo a non-invasive high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) ablation procedure and was discharged just a day after the surgery, fully recovered.
"I never expected the surgery to be so quick and painless, without any incisions," James said. "The focused ultrasound technology is truly amazing! Now, I plan to explore this beautiful city, which I consider my lucky city."
His transformation from a severely ill patient to a tourist leisurely strolling through Chongqing's streets highlights the growing trend of cross-border medical tourism.
The influx of international patients to Chongqing is largely due to China's advantages in policy, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness. China offers a 240-hour visa-free transit policy for citizens of 55 countries, including the US, Russia, and the UK, simplifying entry procedures and lowering travel barriers for foreign patients.
While developed countries often have long waiting periods for major treatments, China's streamlined medical processes — coordinating consultations, examinations, and surgeries — save patients significant time.
The cost-effectiveness of treatment in China is particularly appealing, with its treatment costs often more affordable than those abroad, while still meeting international quality standards.
Many international insurance companies now include Chinese hospitals in their direct billing network, alleviating financial concerns for foreign patients. For instance, HIFU procedures allow patients to be discharged the day after surgery, reducing hospitalization time and costs.
Chongqing's rich cultural and tourism offerings further enhance its appeal as a medical tourism destination. With over 3,000 years of history, the city boasts cultural landmarks such as rock carvings and Hongya Cave, as well as culinary delights like spicy hotpot and noodles.
