Chongqing saw about 2.66 million passenger trips during the three-day Dragon Boat Festival holiday that ended Saturday, according to the local Culture and Tourism Commission.

A total of 235 scenic spots in the city were open to the public during the holiday and most tourists chose short trips in suburban and rural areas, the commission said.

After becoming the fourth municipality in China after Beijing, Shanghai and Tianjin in 1997, the city in southwest China has witnessed fast development and become a modern cosmopolitan area combining advanced transportation systems, outstanding architecture and strong local features.

In recent years, it has become a popular destination for tourists from home and abroad.

Last year, Chongqing received over 10 million travelers during the same three-day holiday.

To prevent the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic, all scenic spots must control the number of visitors and keep it under 30 percent of the maximum passenger capacity.
