Formally established on June 18, 2010, Liangjiang New Area is the first national level opening-up and development area in inland China, and the third nationwide after Shanghai Pudong New Area and Tianjian Binhai New Area.

Beibei district is one of the nine districts of Chongqing city, and an important part of Liangjiang New Area. It is located near Jialing River, and covers an area of 755 square kilometers - with a population of 811,000.
