Tencent Holdings Limited has signed a cooperation agreement with Liangjiang Cloud Computing Company to support its Chongqing Shuitu Cloud Computing Data Center project in Liangjiang New Area, local media reported on March 17.

Tencent, one of the largest internet companies in the world, will partner with China Telecom, China Unicom and Liangjiang Cloud Computing Company. The three companies will lease 1,750 racks with 28,000 earmarked for use by Tencent, including 1,000 racks and 16,000 servers provided by Liangjiang Cloud Computing Company.

Tencent started construction of its cloud computing data center at Liangjiang International Cloud Computing Industrial Park in 2016. Early work on the center included ensuring it would be able to meet the demands of a company as big as Tencent. The data center is projected to be put into operation before July.

“Chongqing will become a core network node for Tencent in the southwest region after the servers are put into use and more data will be stored at Liangjiang New Area. It will allow users in Chongqing a faster network connection without using servers in other regions,” said Wang Dong, chief technology officer of Liangjiang Cloud Computing Company.

Chongqing is now one of the 10 first class points in the national communication network framework, which is attractive to cloud computing and big data companies. At present, various different data center projects including the Pacific Telecom Data Center, China Unicom Western Data Center, China Telecom Western Data Center and Tencent Data Center have been established in Liangjiang International Cloud Computing Industrial Park.

By 2020, the park is expected to host 300,000 servers, with projected output value of around 15 billion yuan ($2.17 billion) for the local cloud computing and big data industries.
