China will soon have a new silicon wafer plant, reducing dependency on foreign sources. A new plant of the Chongqing Advanced Silicon Photoelectricity Technology Co will finish building in late June and go into production by the end of this year.

The plant is slated to manufacture 8-inch and 12-inch semiconductor-grade polished silicon wafers used for integrated circuit and their related products at large scale. After launching its operations, the new plant is expected to produce 6.6 million silicon wafers each year.

The company has invested 1.5 billion yuan ($240 million) in the new plant, making it the largest production base of those two sizes of silicon wafers in China. In the absence of any domestic supplier, China used to import these materials from foreign manufacturers for higher prices before.

The Chongqing Advanced Silicon Photoelectricity Technology Co was founded in Liangjiang New Area, Chongqing in 2011. It is a high-tech company whose business covers the R&D, production and marketing of LED products and polished silicon wafers.
