Manufacturing is still the driving force for Chongqing, one of China's four direct-controlled municipalities,in industrial growth in the first five months of 2015, with automobiles seeing the largest increase, according to the city statistics bureau.
The office said that total output of large industrial enterprises amounted to 792.91 billion yuan ($127.7 billion) in the Jan - May period, for a year-on-year growth of 13.0 percent, and the total output of manufacturing amounting to 642.96 billion yuan, an increase of 13.6 percent, surpassing many other industries such as mining.
Some of the major industries, including electronics, materials and consumer goods, also saw double-digit growth, and one other thing worth mentioning is that automobile manufacturing saw the most rapid, increasing by 18.3 percent, with total output worth 181.48 billion yuan.
Microcomputer devices, however, continued to decline, with laptop output at 20.98 million yuan, down 8.1 percent, and printers, at 6.10 million yuan, showed a decrease of 9.1 percent.
John Edwards, the UK trade commissioner for China, praised Chongqing over its rise as a burgeoning center in intelligent manufacturing.
