Chongqing Municipality plans to invest 78 billion yuan in transportation this year, Chongqing Daily reported.
Chongqing will construct two railways: the Sanwannan and Yuwan lines. Total length will reach 2200 kilometers, an addition of 250 kilometers over existing tracks.
The Sanwannan Railway will start from Sanjiang and run through Wansheng before reaching Nanchuan. It will have a length of 66 kilometers with a designed speed of 140 miles per hour. The railway will be used mainly for transportation of goods.
The Yuwan Railway will have a total length of 247 kilometers, with a designed speed of 250 kilometers per hour. Once operational, it will only take one hour to go by train from Chongqing to Wanzhou, 3 hours less than now.
The Chongqing-Kunming Railway will also be launched within the year. Travelers will then only need 2.5 hours to go from Chongqing to Kunming.
Apart from railways, Chongqing municipality plans to build four highways of a total length of 425 kilometers, and will construct 9000 kilometers of rural roads to solve the transportation problems of 592 impoverished villages.
John Edwards, the UK trade commissioner for China, praised Chongqing over its rise as a burgeoning center in intelligent manufacturing.
