Chongqing recently released a list of 100 outstanding innovative enterprises involved in a number of emerging industries such as intelligent manufacturing and biological medicine.
The 100 enterprises were selected from a total of 161 recommended enterprises. They were assessed based on their innovation potential, innovation investment, innovation achievements and innovation performance.
The total amount invested into annual research and development among the 100 selected enterprises was 7.89 billion yuan ($1.15 billion), accounting for 30 percent of all R&D investment in the city.
The growth rate of the 100 enterprises was 4.9 times higher than the city's average growth rate and the investment amount was 3.2 times the city average.
In addition, 81 of the 100 enterprises have R&D institutions at the municipal-level or above, while 20 enterprises have national-level R&D institutions. They have a combined total of 3,034 valid patents, accounting for 20 percent of all patents in the city.
John Edwards, the UK trade commissioner for China, praised Chongqing over its rise as a burgeoning center in intelligent manufacturing.
