Students at Qinghe Tongxin Primary School in Chongqing's Liangjiang New Area had a special agricultural lesson on Wednesday. They harvested and threshed rice with their teachers and got a feel for just how tough it is to collect every grain.
Led by their principal, Qin Bo, the teachers demonstrated harvest skills and passed along basic knowledge about rice.
"Many children in the city have never seen crops and cannot distinguish between rice and wheat," Qin said.
The school transformed 1.4 hectacres of vacant land into a garden for students. Grains, along with various fruits and vegetables, were planted based on the season. Under the guidance of the agricultural teacher, the children planted independently and experienced hard work and joy of the harvest.
All participants share the fruits of their labors as grains are made into meals in the school canteen.
"Our school advocates nature education. It hopes to help every child become a person who loves and respects nature. At the same time, they can fully experience life in the school," Qin said.
