The Chongqing Municipal People's Government recently issued a plan on new-type urbanization for the 2021-25 period.
A series of development goals have been clarified in the document. By 2025, Chongqing's overall urban capacity will be further increased, and Chongqing will work to become a modern, international, green, and intelligent metropolis with an urbanization ratio of 73 percent. Meanwhile, the Chengdu-Chongqing economic circle initiative should achieve significant progress.
By 2035, the new-type urbanization goal should be fulfilled and the urban population should stand at about 28 million.
To achieve the aforementioned goals, the Chongqing Development and Reform Commission has proposed several tasks. It urged coordination among cities and counties of different scales, more rural residents to move to cities, the deepening of household registration system reforms and the equalization of basic urban public services.
The government, market and society have been directed to join forces to build cities in a scientific, targeted and intelligent way.
Officials are also required to synergize new-type urbanization with rural revitalization, and boost the flow of public resources to reduce the urban-rural gap.
The government should adhere to a goal-, problem-, and result-oriented model to overcome institutional barriers to urbanization.
John Edwards, the UK trade commissioner for China, praised Chongqing over its rise as a burgeoning center in intelligent manufacturing.
