The first level 4 autonomous sightseeing boat in China has begun trial operations, according to news from Chongqing Liangjiang Coordinative Zone in Liangjiang New Area on Feb 24. Residents will hopefully be able to ride the boat before June this year.
The coordinative zone is currently applying for national approval to become a State-level intelligent shipping pilot zone. Once approved, the zone will be able to launch experiments for intelligent manned sightseeing boats, autonomous sanitation boats, and unmanned petrol boats.
As was introduced by an official from the coordinative zone, the autonomous sightseeing boat is easy to operate. Tourists don't need to download any applications, only need to scan a specific QR code to set tasks for the boat, which will finish the trip following the planned route.
The boat is also capable of avoiding possible obstacles, returning to the port, and charging without human intervention.
The boat was mainly developed by Shaanxi Orca Electronic Technology Co and can be controlled remotely, operate along a preset route, and adjust its position according to changes in the waves. It can also be used to monitor water quality.
Zhu Jiannan, founder of Orca Tech, said the sanitation boat developed by the firm has been widely used across China, the United Kingdom, and Spain.
John Edwards, the UK trade commissioner for China, praised Chongqing over its rise as a burgeoning center in intelligent manufacturing.
