Statistics show that total retail sales of social consumer goods in areas directly administered by Liangjiang New Area from January to February this year were valued at nearly 7 billion yuan ($1.1 billion), up 11.8 percent over the same period last year.
The Cuntan international city exhibition center located in Cuntan International New City was put into use in February. At the Belt and Road Commodity Exhibition and Trading Center, people can purchase more than 60,000 imported products and visit pavilions representing 30 countries involved in the Belt and Road Initiative. In addition, a 2,200-meter pedestrian street debuted in the fashion consumption area and features Outlets, IKEA and other renowned retailers.
Meanwhile, the new area held many consumption festivals centered on five themes – cars, cosmetics, food, home appliances and furniture, and scenery. During the three-day Tomb-Sweeping Day, the Oval – a large business and consumption complex in Liangjiang – arranged an outdoor living festival at which young people camped and engaged in a variety of outdoor activities.
On April 3, tourists were invited to wear hanfu – traditional Chinese dresses – and participate in catwalk shows and children were encouraged to try their hands at brush calligraphy at Chongqing Happy Valley.
According to Liangjiang's modern service bureau, the new area will work to create more immersive, experience-based, and interactive consumption scenarios and develop new business models involving contactless delivery, smart shops, and door-to-door services to stimulate local consumption.
John Edwards, the UK trade commissioner for China, praised Chongqing over its rise as a burgeoning center in intelligent manufacturing.
