The Beijing Institute of Technology or BIT, the BIT Chongqing Innovation Center and Cool High Technology (Beijing) Co jointly unveiled the first manned two-seat intelligent and split-type flying car in the world on Nov 17.
It's the result mainly of research by a team led by Xiang Changle, an academician at the Chinese Academy of Engineering.
Flying cars are able to travel on the road as well as by air. The new split-type flying car mainly consists of three parts – the autonomous vertical take-off and landing aircraft, the smart cockpit and the autopilot chassis. It is a three-dimensional transport system that can carry men and cargo.
The maximum take-off weight of the autonomous vertical take-off and landing aircraft is 650 kilograms and it can transport 280 kg of supplies.
An official from the BIT Chongqing Innovation Center said that the split type has given transportation tasks more flexibility, connecting the road and air travel seamlessly.
The sample will start demonstration operations in the national pilot zone of the Internet of Vehicles and the civil aviation pilot area of the Liangjiang New Area, in Southwest China's Chongqing.
John Edwards, the UK trade commissioner for China, praised Chongqing over its rise as a burgeoning center in intelligent manufacturing.
