The Liangjiang New Area in Southwest China's Chongqing municipality is widely said to be fully tapped into the fields of biotechnology and biopharmaceuticals.

That's especially so, in the wake of a cooperation agreement reached by the Chongqing Liangjiang New Area Dadi (International) Life Science Park and the Belgium-based Antwerp University Science Park on Feb 23.

The two sides will promote and deepen their exchanges and cooperation in academic, technological and industrial fields.

The Liangjiang New Area has the advantage of being a hub linking Central Asia, the European Union, ASEAN and the Asia-Pacific market.

It has formed two pillar industries – automobiles and electronics information – with annual output exceeding 200 billion yuan ($28.81 billion) each.

What's more, the new area has further deepened its international cooperation. Last year, cross-border e-commerce transaction volumes there accounted for 82.6 percent of Chongqing's total, with more than 40 foreign-related institutions settling in the area. International cooperation industrial parks such as the China-Germany, China-Sweden and China-Italy industrial parks have been established.

Previously, the Liangjiang New Area cooperated with Belgium in the fields of scientific and technological innovation, biomedicines and automobiles. Enterprises in the area – including Porton Pharmaceuticals and Seres – have joined forces with Belgium in research and development, marketing and other areas.

Moving forwards, plans are for the Liangjiang New Area and Belgium to expand cooperation opportunities in biomedicines, trade logistics and industry development.
