Liangjiang New Area in Southwest China's Chongqing municipality is to fully tap into the fields of biotechnology and biopharmaceuticals, with a cooperation agreement reached by the Chongqing Liangjiang New Area Dadi (International) Life Science Park and the Belgium-based Antwerp University Science Park on Feb 23.
The two sides will promote and deepen exchanges and cooperation in academic, technological and industrial fields.
The Liangjiang New Area has the advantage of being a hub linking Central Asia, the European Union, ASEAN, and the Asia-Pacific market. The New Area has formed two pillar industries of automobiles and electronic information with an annual output exceeding 200 billion yuan ($28.81 billion) each.
The new area has further deepened international cooperation. In 2022, the cross-border e-commerce transaction volume in the new area accounted for 82.6 percent of the city's total, and more than 40 foreign-related institutions have settled in the area. International cooperation industrial parks such as China-Germany, China-Sweden, and China-Italy industrial parks have been established.
Previously, Liangjiang New Area cooperated with Belgium in the fields of scientific and technological innovation, biomedicine, and automobiles. Enterprises in the area, such as Porton Pharmaceuticals and Seres, have cooperated with Belgium in research and development, marketing and other aspects.
In the next step, Liangjiang New Area and Belgium will expand cooperation opportunities in biomedicine, trade logistics, and industry development.
John Edwards, the UK trade commissioner for China, praised Chongqing over its rise as a burgeoning center in intelligent manufacturing.
